14.6 8/12/2005

Removed all ‘modified junctions’ i.e. junction bridges attempting to show route options where lines cross and replaced with rail links. I didn’t think this was possible due to great difficulties at Wigan, west London and other places but careful reading of the timetable and carefull cartography made this possible. Wigan now has both stations. Cathcart circle is now even better - and actually a circle. Added Lee Road and Central to Gainsborough. Moved St Albans caption to right of stations. Made Temple Meads bold. Moved Bournemouth. Changed West London line-Watford link to a smaller shape. Added ‘ship’ symbol to Liverpool. Changed opening date for Liverpool Airport station to June 2006.

14.5 7/10/2005

Ramsgate moved down coast with new angle to Canterbury. Haywards Heath/Lewes/Newhaven/Seaford moved down to improve all round spacing; Lewes-Brighton changed to local; Three Bridges-Barnham made regional with revised layout at junction near Ford and revised angle on Bognor branch. Corrected geographical staion relationship at Dorking.

Consider what to do about Gloucester as not really on through line - important?Changed multiple stations pink to 25% magenta as it seems to fade on my inkjet prints.

14.4 ACoRP 23/9/2005

Created new Community rail partnerships version of map. Removed Ellesmere Port as only place where type ran over line which was made a darker colour to stand out. Also removed reference to Bridgend opening and changed email address on both maps. Not on web yet. Also, corrected Worthing which had creeped along to the junction with the Horsham line. Also made Bradford Interchange a reversing station. Added Liskeard - Looe 11/11/05 (Heritage Railway no. 79 November 2005).

14.4 6/8/2005

Added back in (got lost somewhere in the process) Wakefield - Pontefract and improvements to captions. Changed caption: ‘Not all lines or stations shown Reduced detail in major conurbations’ to: ‘Not all stations shown Not all lines shown in London conurbation’.

Changed mag to 18%, made undeground lines o.5mm to match local and redused white ‘halo’ (to make the yellow stand out from the lilac) to the same width as ‘bridges’. Moved Waterloo East away from circle line. Should the line into Fishguard be regional? Added Galashiels. Changed Swansea into terminal station.

14.3 2/6/2005

Added ‘Lines and stations under construction’ to key. Added new ‘Liverpool South Parkway Interchange’ - (phew) John Lennon Airport station (Modern Railways June 2005). Changed lilac of multiple station symbol to 15% magenta instead of 20% magenta because it looked a bit strong on the web. Moving WCML to left to get Parkway station within Liverpool city blob left Earlstown line into Wigan line not looking so good.

14.2 15.5.2005

Insert all reversing stations - Eastbourne, Bere Alston, Battersby, Castleford, Cromer, Carmarthen, Colchester Town - so passengers don’t panic when their train reverses, goings the other way! But is it a detail too far? But what about Redhill, Twyford, Kilmarnock, Wakefield Kirkgate etc, where services reverse but my rule is that it is a node and therefore direction is imaterial? Thought about that, and those nodes indicate a reversal, so ok.

What about showing Kirkby, Ormskirk and Ellesmere Port as split stations as services do not run through? But then Newton, etc there are loads of nodes where services do not run through onto other lines. Needs thinking about. Removed caption in key ‘planned’. Changed Galashiels to Tweedbank.

Modified Paisley arrangement slightly. Repositioned Chinley caption which was out of line with the station blob. Opened Vale of Glamorgan line with new Barry Island branch and airport station at Rhoose. Noticed link between Queen Street and Central had gone missing - replaced. Had to re-space stations and captions between Swansea and Bridgend to accomodate new captions.

14.1 11.5.2005

Shuffled LNWR & MR caption and station positions in Milton Keynes / Luton area, also make West Hampstead two station blobs. Changed West London line to Watford straight up instead of small curve at Willesden Junction. Made Northampton-Rugby local, as service has been split by the SRA.

14 9/5/2005

Consolidated all of previous into major new version.

Moved Yeovil ‘Junction’ caption to make clearer by moving Axminster and Honiton. Other small improvements to remove v14 glitches. Added Ebbw Vale reopening as Modern Railways May 2005 said it was actually happening.

Altered junction style at Borough Market, instead of X junction with gaps to indicate route options, put in London Bridge link. Made East London Line extension correctly coded (grey blobs). New curve at Willesden Junction to show Brighton-Watford service; curved line through Charing Cross East including move Waterloo NE slightly. Altered Blackfriars - London Bridge geometry, including changing angle of West Hampstead - Blackfriars to 11.25º; moved Stratford-on-Avon down.

13.6-13.9

No designs as consolidated into 14.

13.6.9.5

Chose option 2 keeping main route (Lea Valley) the simplest. Added grouped border to Harwich version B.

13.6.9.4

Two page file to explore options when including new Stratford - Stanstead and Hertford services via Lea Valley.

13.6.9.3

Moved Stratford to the east the same amount as it went west to see what happens with Essex/Kent. Doesn’t help - just spreads Eastbourne and Essex. Return to 13.6.9.2.

13.6.9.2

Moved Eurostar down slightly to stop London spreading. Made LONDON caption larger. Solved North London Line problems by having different radii on each of the top corners, making Willesden Junction more relaxed and a perfect vertical entry into Stratford. Made Fenchurch St one line. Moved Heathrow down (not now aligned with Windsor) which created more space needed after moving WLL west. Changed Wivelsfield to Hayward Heath as the main junction station between Brighton & Lewes lines (trains combine & split there) although not the true node.

13.6.9.1&2

Developed a new lilac multiple station symbol. Changed rule to: ‘multiple stations on different lines’ enabling removal of group shapes around, for example, Portsmouth,Pembroke, Luton. (Ardrossen sort of breaks the rule.)

The grey grouping line didn’t work, the shapes were too difficult and forced captions out of the way. The lilac circle is vague and doesn’t actually have to encompass every detail of the group. Tried soft edges etc but decided on simple oval which I’ve tried to keep about the same proportion.

Moved line out of Marylebone to exit horizontally to clear Euston caption (even though it goes north in reality!). Altered Aylesbury layout (making Willesden J look better. Moved west side of North London Line west to clear Euston caption, associated re-layout around Richmond. Slough added.

Nudged WLL west a bit more (now Euston perfect) but meant slight geometric

alts throughout South and South-East.

13.6.9 10/3/2005

Moved Heathrow airplane symbol to left enabling Heathrow to be closer to London. (Done?) Moved Neasden Junction out to make Euston read better.

13.6.9

Developed into oval London shape - discardede a long time ago because a grey oval looked grubby. Had limitations then on number of colours due to printing litho. But used a lilac colour and tried it in some of the most difficult areas - Birmingham, Liverpool and it seems to be working even when the oval shape doesn’t completely hold the captions.

  • 13.6.7

13.6.6 9/3/2005

Took Southend further out to clear Stratford and simpify area. Open out Gatwick, added Royal to Tunbridge; raised Chatham mainline to enable space for Folkestone caption 13.6.7 Started experimenting with group shape around London - not happy with thin grey lines, but tried diamond shape.

13.6 2/3/2005

Rethought North London and eastern approaches: moved Liverpool St down (& Fenchurch St and changed angle on Crossrail and position in relation to Paddington) to improve KX caption, bring GE main line closer to Essex, made NLL rectangular with rounded corners removing previous conflict between NNL and CTRL2 enabling at long last Willesden Junction to be added, removed Richmond-Woking (must have been left over from Anglia’s Chelmsford-Basingstoke service), added ELL and Dalston (could be H&I?); Remodelled Heathrow and Windsor and added Wokingham - whole area now much more open and less squeezed. Moved Dorking caption. The London changes meant large scale alterations to East Anglia (but enabled long term plan to straighten out routes in and out of Felixstowe), Kent, the south coast and up to Bristol. Tricky around Bristol but offering more space to open out Sussex. Altered Yeovil caption arrangement. Simplified into a rectangle the group border of Liverpool. Joined group borders Lancashire. Still strugleing with Bristol, butmoving Wessex line to left enables Bournemouth caption not to overlap main line.
